All drivers in the UK are required to let the DVLA know whenever information like their name, title and address changes – even if only temporarily, like students moving into university halls.
Many drivers, however, forget to update their address on their driving licence when moving house and in doing so could risk a very costly fine.
Comparethemarket.com last year suggested that 1.5 million drivers in the UK have incorrect address information on their licence, despite it being a legal requirement and being free to update with the DVLA.

The DVLA says it is important drivers keep authorities informed with up-to-date contact information.
“Drivers are required by law to let the DVLA know if they change their name or address. The DVLA then issue a new licence for free,” it said.
“Keeping DVLA informed ensures that drivers can be notified promptly with important information affecting them such as reminders when their licence is due for renewal.
“If a driver fails to notify the DVLA of changes they could face a fine of up to £1000.”

It’s relatively easy for drivers to update the details on their licence online for free, you will need to remember or set up a new Government Gateway ID.
Once motorists have applied for a new photocard licence, it takes one to three weeks for it to be delivered.
As well as keeping their address and title up to date, licence holders must also ensure that their photo is not out of date. Photocard licences must be updated every 10 years to make sure that the photo is up to date, and failure to do so can also land the £1,000 fine.
