That makes the Turbo 3E nearly six times the base price of the standard Renault 5 E-Tech – reborn in 2024 as one of the cheapest electric cars on sale. That price applies only for the first 500 ‘priority orders’ in Europe and the UK, the Middle East, Japan and Australia.
The Turbo 3E does get some serious upgrades to justify that price, including two in-wheel electric motors sending 540hp – and a startling 4,800Nm of torque – through the rear wheels only.
That makes the Turbo 3E the most powerful Renault road car ever. With an aluminium base, carbon-fibre body and 1450kg kerbweight, that translates to a claimed 0-62mph sprint time of under 3.5 seconds.
Developed by Renault’s sporting brand, Alpine, the Turbo 3E is described by the brand as “a beast of a car built for rallying, drift and track performance, adapted for the road”.
Renault also claims a dramatic increase in charging speed – up to 350kW on a DC rapid charger - over the regular 5 E-Tech thanks to an 800-volt electrical architecture. That can charge the 70kWh battery from 15-80% in around 15 minutes, with a total range of over 249 miles quoted.
The Turbo 3E won’t arrive in showrooms until 2027, with total production limited to 1980 units – that’s the year the original Renault 5 Turbo was released.
However, customers can now place orders on a dedicated website and select the dealer of their choice, where they will sign a reservation form and can choose the number of their future 5 Turbo 3E. Both the selected dealer and customer will “contribute to its pre-financing”, effectively paying for the car’s development.
The initial Turbo 3E prototype will be on display at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on 10 July.
By early 2026, customers will be able to customize their car and create their own exterior and interior delivery, choosing from a wide range of colours and materials to create a unique example. The first cars will then be delivered in 2027.
