First models eligible for full £3,750 Electric Car Grant revealed

First models eligible for full £3,750 Electric Car Grant revealed
The first two models eligible for the maximum Electric Car Grant Discount have been revealed – and they aren’t the cars industry analysts were expecting.

The Department for Transport has confirmed that the new Ford Puma Gen-E electric small SUV, and the e-Tourneo electric van-based MPV, have both qualified for the maximum ‘Band 1’ discount of £3,750. That brings the list price of the former down to £26,245.

They are the first of two models to qualify for the maximum discount, with the rest of the 30 models confirmed so far qualifying for £1,500 off the list price.

Alongside the Ford models, the latest announcement confirms four new EVs (from Peugeot and DS) are eligible for the lower £1,500 ‘Band 2’ discount. These join models from Citroen, Renault and Vauxhall, among others.

Eligibility for the ECG depends on the scheme's sustainability standards, such as the emissions output of the countries where the cars are built and the use of renewable energy in production. More models will be announced in due course.

The scheme is part of £650 million of funding aiming to make it cheaper and easier to buy or lease an electric car. It's available for eligible EVs that cost up to £37,000, supporting more affordable options.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said of the scheme: "We're delivering on our promise to make it easier and cheaper for families to go electric.

"This is about backing drivers, putting money back into people's pockets and creating the jobs and growth that will drive Britain forward, delivering on our Plan for Change."

What are the cars eligible for the Electric Car Grant?

These are the 24 new models that are eligible for the discount as of 27th August. This is a £1,500 discount unless specified:

RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: “It’s great to see details of the first two models qualifying for the full £3,750 Electric Car Grant. This represents a significant saving for drivers which we hope further stimulates demand and encourages other manufacturers to follow suit.

“We’ve long called for the Government to reintroduce an EV grant aimed at the more affordable end of the market, so it’s very positive to see this happening in support of the switch to electric motoring."
